How To Deal With Being Sick While Pregnant

When I was about 14 weeks pregnant, I got the flu, an upper respiratory infection, a sinus infection, and a terrible head cold. Needless to say, I was super sick and absolutely miserable. As I’m writing this post, I have a head cold and all I can think about, is how grateful I am that I’m not sick while pregnant right now. Being sick while pregnant is really tough because there are so many medications that you aren’t allowed to take. It’s also easier to get sick while you are pregnant because your immune system isn’t as strong as it would be if you weren’t pregnant.

DISCLAIMER: I am not a doctor. You should consult your doctor before taking any of these medicines.

If you haven’t read my post 10 Things Nobody Tells You About Pregnancy, definitely check that out!

How to Avoid Being Sick While Pregnant

One of the best things that you can do while pregnant is boost your immune system. Personally, I took vitamin D every night with my prenatal pills (after I experienced being miserably sick) and I still do at 9 months postpartum. There are a lot of great immune boosters out there though. MARY RUTH ORGANICS are wonderful vitamins and supplements for children, but they can be used for adults as well! The link will take you directly to their immunity products though! Whatever kind of immune system boosters you decide to take, be sure to faithfully take them!

You can also avoid getting sick while pregnant by some other simple things such as eating healthier, exercising, getting all of the sleep that you need, and drinking lots of water. These things will help your immune system stay strong.

Pregnancy Safe Medicines for Cold, Flu, and Allergies

Always be sure to check with your doctor before taking any of these medications, but here are a few medications that you can take if you’re sick while pregnant. There are probably a lot more out there, but you can try AFRIN NASAL SPRAY, ALLEGRA, BENADRYL, CLARITIN, FLONASE, MUCINEX, DELSYM COUGH SYRUP, SUDAFED, ZYRTEC, COUGH DROPS, and TYLENOL (PM, sinus, extra strength and #3). As you can see, there really isn’t a lot of options, but hopefully one will work for you! I didn’t link any of these, as they are all over the counter medicines.

Other Things You Can Try

When I was sick while pregnant, the only things that worked for me was nasal spray, and BREATHE RIGHT NASAL STRIPS. You guys, these literally saved my life. I wasn’t sleeping at night because I was so congested and couldn’t breathe. There are only a few medicines for congestion that you can take while pregnant and none of them worked for me. These nasal strips are basically stickers that you put just below the bridge of your nose. They help open your nasal passages more, and it helps you breathe better!

Other things that are helpful that aren’t ingested medicines are, netti pots, vapor rub, and humidifiers.

Being sick while pregnant is so incredibly hard. Pregnancy is already hard, but adding sickness to that is a real challenge. Hopefully this post will help you feel more relief during this allergy season and if you happen to get sick, there are plenty of things here for you to try!

Do you have any other tips and tricks for being sick while pregnant? I’d love to hear them, and I’m sure other desperate mommas would too! Tell me in the comments!
