My Favorite Styles of Baby Clothing in the First Year

After being a Mom for 9 months, I have really grown to like and dislike certain styles of clothing for my son. Some things are just ridiculously hard to put on, let alone work with after every diaper change. Other things are super convenient and I go out of my way to do laundry, just so my baby can wear that outfit again. So, if you are a first time mom that is trying to buy clothes for your baby, but you don’t know what is good, I got you! Here is a list of my favorite baby clothing items and why I like them!

Pajamas

Zipper pajamas are seriously the best way to go! At night, when your baby is tired and just ready for bed, zipper jammies are the fastest way to get your baby in bed. Snaps take wayyyy too long, especially if you’ve got a wiggle monster like me! If you can find the double zipper jammies for late night diaper changes (mostly just up until the 3 month sizes), you will be so set! I also really like it when pajamas have mittens attached! That is great up until about the 3 month size as well! Definitely my favorite way to go! HERE is an example of the best pair of pajamas!

AVOID

Try to stay away from those button up/snaps pajamas, especially after 3 months. They really just become a pain after that point. Also, if you can help it, really try to avoid jammies that don’t have mittens attached. That has really become a deal breaker for me, haha.

Daily Clothing

My absolute favorite thing to dress my baby in is one pieces! HERE is a set of 2 that are so cute (for a boy)! They are seriously so convenient and easy to take on and off. Cute one pieces aren’t always the easiest to find though, so onesies with some cute little sweatpants are a great option too! That is probably the most common outfit you’ll find my baby in. In regards to pants, I like to stick to the stretchy, thinner pants, like THESE. I really like it when they are tight around the ankles too, because it helps keep the socks on!

Obviously you want some cute outfits too (like my cover picture for this post)! It is super fun to have your baby dressed up in a super cute outfit, but when you’re just hanging out at home and nobody is coming to visit, there’s no point in getting the baby all dressed up in inconvenient clothing, at least that’s my opinion.

AVOID

Avoid t-shirts that you won’t put a onesie underneath. When your baby isn’t really crawling and walking on their own yet, you’re constantly picking them up and it’s annoying when their shirt rides up and their skin is exposed- especially if it’s cold. Even though those shirts can be so cute sometimes, if you’re anything like me, those t-shirts will just sit in the closet, unworn. I also really don’t like those big bulky jeans and khakis. They are so miserable to take on and off for diaper changes, so try to avoid those as well. Really, just try to avoid any bulky clothing for your baby.

Clothing Accessories

Socks are really important for little newborns since their feet are so cold all of the time. Be sure to get tight socks that are really long. If they are short, it’s easier for them to fall off! THESE socks are perfect! I love them! Shoes are really cute, but you won’t really use them until after your baby starts walking, maybe even standing. When you get shoes, be sure to get to most convenient pairs to put on, it will make your life so much easier!

AVOID

Avoid short socks that are a size too big. Don’t waste your money on several pairs of newborn-9 month shoes. A pair here and there are so cute and wonderful for pictures, but you don’t need more than like one pair for each size. Also, avoid shoes with laces and other tricky ways to keep them on the baby’s feet.

Sleep Sacks and Swaddles

I definitely prefer to use velcro swaddles. There are so many out there, but of the ones that I have tried, I really like the velcro sleep sack swaddle combination, specifically the ones made by Halo (HERE is the Halo one). Because I liked those so much, I switched right to halo’s sleep sack as well. They have zippers that go both ways and they also have different togs (weights) which is great for different seasons! If you can find sleep sacks with long sleeves, I absolutely recommend that as my top choice. Those can just be tricky to find. When it comes to sleep sacks and swaddles though, you really can’t go wrong. There are a lot of great options out there for both! THIS ZIPADEE brand is one that I have been wanting to try, but just haven’t gotten to yet. I’ve heard lots of amazing things about this sleep sack though!

Hopefully this post will help you plan out your clothing shopping trips for your baby a little better! I have really become passionate about the things that I have found. I will be shopping very specifically for our next baby, that’s for sure! Do you have any other outfits/clothing items that are must haves or big no no’s for your baby? Tell me in the comments!
