8 Things to Put in Your Postpartum Kit

Preparing your postpartum kit while you are still pregnant is the BEST thing to do. It will make life so much easier when you are trying to adjust to a new baby, a new body, and breastfeeding (if you choose to breastfeed, check out my post about preparing a nursing basket). Here is a list, with links, of the necessities you will need in your postpartum basket! I tried to find things as cheap as possible, and if you are smart, your postpartum kit can cost you under $100!

1. Giant Pads

Huge pads are a MUST for postpartum recovery. Here are some pads that you can easily get delivered to your door through Amazon. These are size 4, 48 count, which is probably a good place to start since everyone has a different postpartum recovery process. If you want to be safe and stock up on some more in a different size, here are size 2, 42 count. If you choose to buy both of these packs of this brand, then it will cost you approximately $16. You can definitely buy cheaper brands though and save more!

2. Peri Bottle

If you haven’t heard or read about this specific peri bottle, it is the BEST! This bottle is much more convenient than the ones that they give you at the hospital. It has a much better angle that will make your life so much easier. It even comes with a cute bag to put it in to make it convenient to travel with as well. This specific bottle is one of the cheaper ones on Amazon priced at about $11!

3. Flushable Wipes

Flushable wipes are very handy to have in your postpartum recovery kit! I got mine at Walmart, but here are some through Amazon that you can purchase. I didn’t get that many at first, because again, everyone’s recovery is different and I didn’t want to overbuy, but if you do buy too many, it’s not like you don’t have a new baby that will definitely use wipes! This set of wipes costs about $16.

4. Tucks

Tucks are great for comfort when you are all swollen down there, which is no fun! I got this pack of two to start out with and figured that since Amazon has fast enough shipping, I can order more if need be. This set is about $17!

5. Dermoplast Spray

Because you are so swollen and tender down there, this spray will help to relieve some of the pain! This is a small can for $10, but you can also buy a much larger one for $22.

5. Stool Softener

The last thing you want to do during postpartum recovery is create more pain down there, so stool softener is important! I put this Colace brand in my postpartum kit because it had the best reviews for postpartum use specifically. It costs about $12!

6. Granny Panties Underwear

You need some pretty reliable underwear to hold all of these items that have been mentioned above, so granny panties it is! They are also much more comfortable when they are loose. The last thing you want is something that fits super tight down there! You will want a lot (because you might have to change them more than just once a day) and you will want cheap ones that you can just throw away if need be. These are around $10 for a pack of 6 (depending on the size you choose, the price might be more or less), and you can even choose different colors if you want to make life more exciting!

I always kept 1-2 extra pairs of these in my postpartum caddy because the last thing you want to do is walk around and try to grab clean ones when you are already a mess!

7. Extra Roll of Toilet Paper

Not only did I stock up on a ton of toilet paper before having my baby, but I also always kept an extra roll in my postpartum basket in case I ever ran out. That is NOT the time to run out of toilet paper, so do yourself a favor and always have an extra one handy! I made it my hubby’s job to make sure my basket was always stocked with toilet paper and clean underwear in case I forgot!

8. Grocery Bag(s) for Unexpected Messes

I kept 1-2 grocery bags in my postpartum basket all the time in case I needed them. Whether I needed to put pad wrappers into a grocery bag because the trash was already full, or I needed somewhere to put dirty underwear (other than the floor), grocery bags were a great thing to have in my basket!

Summary and Cost

For the basket/caddy, there are SO many options to choose from on Amazon, but I would recommend a plastic one (easier to clean up than a material one if it gets messy) and I would pick one with several separators of some sort. This one is super cheap on Amazon ($6!), but if you want a nicer or cuter one, they can cost up to $20. However, if you purchase everything for your postpartum kit through my links, it will cost you between $90-$110 depending on what exactly you buy. Having a baby is expensive for mom too, unfortunately, but if you have Amazon prime, you can get all of your necessities for under $100. All you have to buy separately is toilet paper and have grocery bags ready! Good luck mama!
