Breastfeeding is Tough

As I’m writing this post, I am breastfeeding my 8 week old baby boy. Being a mom is already tough, but let me tell you, being a breastfeeding mom is tough! I thought I had prepared for breastfeeding so well when I was pregnant, but turns out I didn’t prepare myself for the mental and emotional aspects of breastfeeding at all. There are definitely sweet and special moments when breastfeeding your little babe, but there are also REALLY hard moments.

There are times when you barely sit down to eat a warm meal that you (finally) found time to make, and then your baby starts crying for food. Cold meals for daysssss.

There are times in the middle of the night when you are soooo sleep deprived, and the baby starts crying for food. You have swollen eyes and can barely keep your eyes open enough to see the baby’s latch.

There are moments where your nipples are SO sore and hurt SO bad that when the baby starts crying for food, you start crying too.

There are times when you have so much to do, and baby starts crying for food. You say to yourself, “Okay, I’ll just feed him quick and then get back to it…” but baby decides to eat for 30-40 minutes.

There are times when you are soooooo tired of having your butt glued to the couch from nursing, and when you finally get to stand up, the baby starts crying for food.

There are times when you burp your baby after a feeding, and he spits just about everything up that you fed him. He cries for more food because his tummy is empty now and you have to start the process over again.

There are times when you have a super cute pre-pregnancy top that you can’t wait to wear, but your milk-filled boobs have grown so much that nothing in your old wardrobe fits you anymore.

There are times when you have to feed your baby in public and let me tell you, that is NO easy task! Using a cover makes breastfeeding so much harder. Baby kicks and punches and moves that cover all around and you can’t see what on earth is happening in there. It’s stressful to say the least!

The perfect, special moments make up for the really hard times though…

There are times when your eyes meet your baby’s little eyes and you just feel an IMMENSE amount of love for them.

There are times when you lay down to breastfeed them and you lay there cuddling and feeding your sweet babe and its THE BEST.

There are times when your baby rests his hands on your breast and it is the sweetest, most touching thing you could ever ask for at that moment.

There are times when you hear them make cute little gulping noises while they are eating and it’s so precious.

There are times when you remember how AMAZING breastfeeding is for you and your baby. It is so healthy for both of you and such a miracle!

And finally, there are times when you feel an overwhelming amount of love for your baby. You gain a bond like no other and it is something to cherish and treasure!

Great post! Nursing a baby is the most amazing adventure, but it can be so much more challenging than expected! I’ve breastfed all four of my babies and each one was different. I wanted to give up so many times! I thought I had it all figured out by baby #4 and then hit challenges I never even knew existed with babies 1,2, and 3. New mommies need lots of encouragement!

Such an honest account of what breastfeeding is like! With my first, I took a breast feeding class and there was a big portion of breast feeding in my birthing class but no one was honest enough to say that it was hard. I really wish I would have known that sometimes its just hard in the beginning and it takes a lot of time instead of feeling like I was doing something wrong.
